Langley Insurance Agency History

Langley Insurance Agency - Peru was started on 12 March 1932 by Ross E Clark and was called the Ross E Clark Agency. The agency began in a front room of Mr. Clark’s home. Mr. Clark was assisted by his wife, Ruth. In 1953, Mr. Clark's step-daughter, Barbara (Cromie) Thew joined the agency and worked there until her passing in 1990. In 1963, after Mr. Clark passed away, Donald Cromie, son of Mrs. Clark joined the operation. Working with his sister, Barbara Thew, this brother and sister team kept the agency continuing. In 1983, Mr. Cromie retired after 20 years of service.

In 1985, James R Langley and James R Langley, Jr. purchased the Agency from Mrs. Clark and Barbara Thew. In 1990, James R Langley Jr. took over the agency full time after Mrs. Thew passed away. At that time, the agency began to be known as J. Langley Associates - Clark Branch. In 1997, when James Langley Jr. became the sole owner, the agency name was changed one last time to the current name Langley Insurance Agency. The agency continued and flourished at 288 Mannix Rd. location for a total of 74 years.

In preparation of the Agency’s 75th Anniversary, a new "green" location was constructed in the business district of Peru at 5 Davey Drive and opened on 02 October 2006. The building was constructed of many fuel-saving materials and recycled products. Including high-efficiency interior lighting, casement windows, recycled masonry siding, solar panels for electricity, and a natural gas heating system from Germany.

The Peru location is still as it always has been - an independent insurance agency, family owned and operated. Though the agency writes for many top carriers, National Grange Mutual (aka Main Street America Co.) continues to be a top performer within the agency as well as being the first company associated with the business in 1932. The agency primarily writes home and auto packages, but will also write small business insurance as well as farms and ranches.
